Dealing with stage fright during a public presentation
on December 17th, 2011 at 7:41 pmIt is usually common to see public speakers getting worked up just before they come on stage to deliver a talk or presentation. This has often resulted in varied consequences and utter disaster if not properly managed. Some motivational speakers never get to recover from the shock of stage fright and thus proceed on the journey towards oblivion.
Others are able to manage the ugly situation called “stage fright” by deploying some techniques. These techniques when properly implemented can rescue such individuals from the shame and embarrassment on stage.
Looking at the mirror
This is an ancient technique which involves the individuals looking at oneself on the mirror and speaking boldly to your exact self. The essence of such rituals is to remove fear from the heart of the individuals. At such moments, one can speak some positive words to oneself straight in the eyes without blinking. This technique has been known to have a very positive effect on the individual.
Taking a warm/cold bath just before your presentation
There have been cases where motivational speakers go for a warm or cold shower just before their big presentation. This will obviously eliminate stress, anxiety and tension from the system and leave the individual refreshed and reinvigorated for the big stage. The nerve cells need this therapeutic treatment based on the fact that each time one takes a bath; it has a healing effect on the nerves and keeps the body energized.
Stop looking at a particular direction during your presentation
More than 12 years ago, I was making a presentation in a packed church comprising, men, women and youths. I was so edgy, that it was difficult controlling myself in front of such intimidating audience. In the course of the presentation, I made a costly mistake which derailed the entire presentation. I looked in a particular direction and saw a young lady laughing. Her laughter caught me off guard and I could no longer concentrate on what I was saying. It was possible she wasn’t laughing at me, but the mistake at been made already.
It is important that we avoid looking at a particular direction, to avoid getting distracted during the course of a presentation. One can look blankly at the audience without fixing ones gaze in any particular direction. This will help calm your nerves and create a convenient platform for a good presentation.
Doing your home work before coming on stage
There is nothing as worse as watching someone going on stage unprepared. That obviously is a recipe for failure, as the probability of such an individual developing cold feet is so high. The benefit of preparing very well is usually seen when things are not going according to plan, as one can easily adapt and switch easily to meet up with every challenge thrown on stage.
Cross check all the materials to be used and go through them over and over again, until you are convinced nothing has been left untouched. In this way, stage fright is minimized and success is guaranteed.
Deploying these and other techniques which are not mentioned here will go a long way in ensuring that one is not caught pants down in the course of doing a presentation. It may not be a smooth ride, but surely one can weather any storm that comes ones way without sinking under the sea of stage fright.
